So in our last episode, Campfire had setup camp, and ridden to the starting point...

So to make good on my bullet points for the story, our one female rider showed up from the Phoenix area (that's the "girl" part of it). That's her on the left in the last picture, and she was a first class trooper. Typical 20 something with some creative hair, but that girl could ride! AND... She started riding in March! That's right, she started riding and six months later she's out with the boys heading up fire trails. Talk about girl power! She took her compliments well, and the tom-boy jabs she kicked right back at whoever threw them. Of course, most of the older male riders quickly took over the fatherly rolls and watched out for her at every turn.

The main group headed for Crown King for a 100+ mile loop, while three of us headed up around the mountain for a little less dust than 16 bikes can produce. The main group had it's share of dumped bikes we heard later, but no injuries except for egos. No breakdowns were reported, and no one got towed back into camp.

Image

Darrel, John, & myself had a nice leisurely ride up from burned out desert scape where the dust was a little challenging, to some great forest areas.

Image

Image

Our tour guide for our little group was Darrel who works for the county road department in the area. Lots of knowledge about the area, and the history of some almost missed places.
This was a stage stop back in the day, and he pointed out the remnants of the rock foundation of the old shack.

Image

Our trail once again took us by Palace Station, a real stage stop that has been restored & preserved. I can't imagine the feeling of being in a stage going up that road.

Image

http://theproperfunction.com/palace-station-arizona/

The groups returned to camp throughout the afternoon for a unbelievable dinner for cowboy beans, pasta salad, and smoked brisket. NO ONE, went hungry.
Image

We did have a windstorm that afternoon, and one tent blew away down the field, but everything was recovered by the drunken search party.
After the meal, the chairs came out, and the stories started flying more than the wind that afternoon.

Image

Image

The next morning was another great weather day, and the sunrise was great to watch. Nothing like "camping", and walking around with a cup of coffee enjoying the views, sounds, and smells of the desert.

Image

Oh yeah, another bullet point. There were wild animals invading our campsites.

Decided to try to beat the crowd to Phoenix and headed down the hill early to Scottsdale. I'm glad I did, only to find my uncle in a strange mood that would soon be explained. Upon arriving, I found the locals protesting in his back yard about the lack of free food available.

Image

I started to unpack as soon as I got there Sunday afternoon, and he was heading to the hospital for my aunt. He gave me a list of favors around the house, and I started in considering the situation. He soon called me from he hospital and asked if there was anyway my mother & sister's flight could be upgraded or changed to get them there ASAP. I knew it was bad from the tone in his voice.
Called my sister, gave her the details, and the task of changing flights. Called mom and told her to pack NOW!
They were able to fly in Monday morning, and were at the hospital by 11:00 AM. They called me at 12:30 and told me to get there soon. I arrived at 1:00, nurses explained the situation, and we all gathered by her side. She passed away peacefully at 2:30. It was a blessing that every problem of the last few years was over. We all knew it, and could find solace in the knowing she was at rest now.
We had had some great conversations over the years, and she always expected tales from my rides. She was almost as excited when I got the KLR as I was about ten years ago.
She was an amazing woman, I'll miss her.
Image

There............ That parts over, now for something uplifting.

Image

Tuesday was the typical strange day, but those locals took our minds off of the sadness with lots of antics.
There was one baby Javelina in the heard, and it would jump, run around, and pounce on the others as they were laying down in the heat.
Image

Interesting animals to watch.
And now for the romance part for Doc's sake, we watched as the baby was nursing on mom, the Alpha of the herd stumbles over and decides that it's time to make another. He starts in on mother while the baby is having lunch. Talk about multi-tasking.

Now to the other end of the spectrum of feelings.
A long, long time ago...
In a Galaxy far, far away...
:DirtDOG

OK, but it was a long time ago. I did something that dad asked me to do to help someone.

Image

Mom was cleaning things out a couple of years ago and gave me a box of my old report cards, photos, and these newspaper clippings. I remembered them well, and still have the South Vietnamese flag. Reading over the the old item, it came to me that I had a name, 4th Infantry, and a place. I searched for Frank on Facebook, and there he was. I sent him a message asking if he was the guy that got a California flag from a little kid. He responded that he was, and still had the flag, and was so appreciative that I had reached out to him. Couple of months ago, I started the schedule of the ride, and included meeting Frank in there. He was ecstatic that I was coming down to meet him after 53 years.
I had him pick the place and time, and we met as old friends after 53 years on Tuesday.

Image

Image

Leaving Frank & his wife after lunch, I realized hat I was only a few miles from a Cabela's "Super Store" in Glendale. I wanted to do a little plinking on the way home out there in the desert, and figured I should buy some ammo for the Wrangler while I had the chance.
WRONG!
Seems the people in Arizona are preparing for something.
Image

Those boxes left on the shelf are 454 Casull bear rounds. No 22, no 9mm, no 380, no 30-30, no 223, no, no, no, no, no........ Oh wait! There's some 17 HMR! For WHAT price? uh, no again. :wall
Feeling depressed again, but with money in my pocket, I did what any gun lover would do with no ammo to buy.
I bought a new scope, and some gun oil, and a new case, and.... :wings

As I returned to my uncles house and conveyed the story of meeting Frank, it seemed to lighten the mood a bit, and more stories were told about the old days, and family.
It was all good.

Went for a walk outside to the driveway as the sun was setting and reached for my phone to capture nature telling me that things are looking up.

The phrase "It was the worst of times and the best of times." has stuck in our minds for a reason.

I am happy for you and sad for you in equivalent measures. Thank you for your sharing your travels and travails.

Chapter 4, or 5, whatever... Heading home.

Cooked a couple of nights for the family while I was there (old firehouse recipes) and made the Uncle happy with anything that was not frozen first. Even cooked him over medium eggs & toast for breakfast a couple of times and you would have thought that guy was at the best Route 66 diner someplace. Glad to make him happy.

Packed up for the trip home, and since I had the trailer, he started giving me some of my cousin's stuff. He passed away six years ago, and was a HUGE music fan with a HUGE CD collection.
Guess what I got? :Clap
I think there's entire libraries of Rush, Led Zep, The Who, The Rolling Stones, etc.
WOW!

With the heat of the area, he gets up around 4:00 AM every day to get things done outside before things start to melt around there. And I was up with him the day I left and we watched the sunrise on the patio over a cup of coffee together. Finally pulled out of there loaded down with no real rush, only a plan of get half way and find a place to sleep. Maybe the trailer? Maybe a hotel? Have to see what lies ahead.

Stopped down the road from the house and grabbed a coffee for the trip, and looked at this massive CD case I put in the front seat next to me. Sipped my coffee, and just flipped open the case and grabbed a random disc and popped it in with the volume up.
One of those angels was guiding me.

Put a few miles down along with that coffee, and the next thing you know, I gotta pee!
Wasn't too long before I see a side road heading off into the desert, and I took it for a rest stop.
Not a whole lot going on out there, and while relieving myself I see some broken bottles and some cans laying there in the dirt along with some shell casings.
Target time! :wings

Image

Loaded up the new Wrangler and started playing cowboy. That bad guy can never stood a chance especially with the music coming from the truck.

Had fun plinking away out there with the cactus, but got back on the road and made it to Tehachapi where the Holiday Inn Express was waiting for me. Hot shower, nice bed, and even a pillow selection made for a good rest.
The next morning, I walked across the street to Denny's that had temporary "outdoor seating" made up for the COVID regulations of no inside dining.
Again, the locals were waiting for me and did not seem to mind the vagrant passing through.

Image

He did NOT like my offering of a pancake morsel, but drooled over my bacon every time I took a bite.
Five more hours and I was home.

Again, thanks for riding along.

Sorry to hear about the passing of a family member, it is always a tough time even when it is a blessing that the suffering is over and they are now in a better place. Peace be with you and your family.

You will remember this trip for a long time and I am grateful to be able to read it. Thanks for sharing your story with us.

Well, it's another Northern California tale...

Got back from Arizona on the 26th, and then the "Glass Fire" started on the 27th up valley. Friend calls me on the 30th and explains he's been doing "private firefighting" for a winery up there. But he has to leave, and needs someone to stand fire watch if it comes back around. Hoses on the ground, pumps in place, their own water supply in reservoirs... Why not?

Back into the thick of things, and it all smelled so familiar. The winery was saved along with buildings and houses, but the neighbors were not so lucky.

Driving in...

Image

Image

First night's view, it had jumped across the Valley at that point to the west side.

Image

Up behind the place on the hill got cleaned out pretty good.

Image

Neighbor's place.

Image

Even a lot of places down on the Valley floor were destroyed.

Image

Three days up there in the smoke, and it calmed down enough that they felt good enough to release me.
Spent my time clearing brush, downed trees, and more prep work for the future.
Now I know why I retired. I am tired.

You're not kidding, about 75 yards up a hill (little hill) dragging a hose line made me appreciate being retired.
But talk about being spoiled... I remember being deployed on Strike Teams for days on end and given sack lunches to last us 24 hours. Sleeping in the dirt, or the hose bed on the engine, and dreaming of toilet and not having to dig a hole.
This gig had a HUGE generator running the winery & office building. Two bathrooms, in the office area, a kitchen, an upper guest house with a full bathroom (that I snuck into one night and used the shower), an they gave me a UTV to drive around the property in. Oh, and "Guest WiFi" was also powered up.
Plush duty.

Smoke everywhere, but still nice.

Neighbor I ride with had surgery on his left arm & bicep tendon, and he's going into riding withdrawal.
But he thinks that his 1200GS needs a little exercise and wants me to take it out for a spin.
Me: "How long of a ride can I take it on?"
Him: "it's got a full tank of gas."

Then my other buddy calls and wants to know if I want to go for a ride on Sunday...
Weather is perfect (cold by California standards, but clear) so we meet up at his house, and then he tells me "Moose" is joining us today.
Up through Sonoma, Santa Rosa, and out Stewart's Point Road to Highway 1.
There's a store/Deli there and lunch time was perfect. Moose complained that I was lead and parked in the gravel just because he had the RT. :whipme

Image

BUT... the ocean was FLAT, and calm with not even a breeze to disturb the fishing boats off the coast.
And a crowd of people out for the end of the Holiday weekend and perfect weather.
Along with LOTS of other bikes.

Image

The ride back down Highway 1 was an enlightening experience with great views, but we didn't pull over to take pictures. Sorry.
Feeling very thankful that I live here and can enjoy a day ride like this one.

Stay safe, stay warm, and enjoy the season.

Last Wednesday we had our "Honor Ride" for our buddy Sammy who passed away. Headed out for Lockeford and Sammy's favorite meat market for some fresh sausage and teriyaki beef stick (see "What are we eating" thread).

Image

Now here's Kalifornia thinking for ya....... Lockeford is in Stanislaus County, COVID lockdown includes no indoor, or outdoor dining, TAKE OUT only. All public restrooms are closed, none available at gas stations, anywhere.
Greg rode down and met us from Valley Springs (20 miles up the rode) which is in Calaveras County, and he suggested we ride up there for lunch.
Off we go on the bikes. :letsfide

We pull into Valley Springs and head for Hawg's Dogs, and great hot dog/burger joint.

Image

Walk into into the restaurant with our masks on, sit down at a table and take off our masks. Waitress comes over and greets us with a smile (Doc would have liked her :LadyDraco ) and asks us what we want to drink. We all have an awesome lunch and the Western Burger was excellent. Free refills on the Root Beer, locals coming and going, waitress greets most by name, it's just NICE.
She strolls by our table and I ask her if the restrooms are open.
"Sure they are hon, but I'm not cleaning it for you first"
Get up and use the facilities (which were extra clean anyway) and head back to the table. YEP! The check had come all on one tab, so I lost and was handed the tag with everyone's cash. "Here, you figure it out" explains Mel.
We all overpaid, so the waitress was getting a very nice tip that day.

And we didn't mind.

Some nice places give you little mints or hard candies with your bill. This place? NOPE!
This place has REAL CLASS.

Image

We each got two of those packages.
Then Greg took us on a little back-roads ride up to Campo Seco, a map dot with some cool buildings from the Gold Rush days. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campo_Seco,_California

The sun was out, a great day of riding, but.....................
I was enjoying the day so much, I didn't stop and take any good landscape pictures. :fp
My apologies. More next ride.

It was a 199 mile loop for me, and enjoyed the day.

It's the little places in little places that I find the most enjoyable. Corporate stores have their positives, sure, but mom and pop is where it's at. :nod
