Re: Whats your NET speed?
I have been talking with our fiber optics guy and he told me that it would be best to hard wire the tvs to the modem because streaming via wifi will eat up the speed...make sense, and your efforts proved it..

Re: Whats your NET speed?

Given my success recently with my 4G modem and connecting with a new cable, I have ordered a longer S/FTP Cat 6 cable to try connecting to the fibre optic 'NBN' modem [that we don't currently use].
If it works, then the problem will have been the cheap router/modem they provided. It gave completely useless WiFi in the same room let alone in other parts of the house. That's why we went to using a 4G modem on my work computer, especially when we worked from home for 9 months last year.

Re: Whats your NET speed?
I've always been a believer in "a cable is better than wifi." Even with the new standards, though the speed is possible, interference and limited range to get that higher wifi speed make wifi the lesser of the connections. It's good for phones and tablets. Anything that is stationary should have a good cable connection.

Re: Whats your NET speed?
An update on Delicate Snowflake's adventures with Cat 6a [?] cables...
Short Version - good cables help a lot. My new ones are 'S/FTP'.
Previously the fibre-optic connection here was not stable. I could not use it reliably for work, and for the past year have instead used a 4G hotspot modem, connected to my computer by a short cable.
Recently I upgraded the short cable from the 4G modem to my computer, and the speed went up significantly.
Today the new long cable to connect to the fibre-optic 'NBN' modem arrived, interestingly the speed does not match the 4G connection, but the connection is rock-solid and does not seem to vary much at all.
First screenshot is the fibre connection, with the new cable. Note the download graph with no bumps or dips. If I'd had this cable a year ago I would have never had to buy the 4G modem. Note also the very low ping and jitter.
Now the 4G modem. The speeds are much higher, but they vary considerably through the day, 70 ~ 280 Mbps download, and 6 ~ 30 upload. Jitter does not seem to be measured on a cellular connection, but the ping is much higher than the fibre connection.
There are a whole range of cables now available, mine cost $6 and $13 respectively, the only difference being their length. There are other specs e.g. U/UTP but I am not sure what the difference is compared to S/FTP which I bought. All are a great leap over the old standard Cat 5 cables.
Highly recommended.

Re: Whats your NET speed?
Here's the way too much information on cable types link: https://www.universalnetworks.co.uk/faq ... sftp-mean/.
Bottom line is: You bought better insulated cables. That means less interference and better speeds.

Re: Whats your NET speed?
UPDATE: Still on HUGHESNET, but fiber optics are run to the house, waiting now for inhouse install team to get it in here.
Here is todays test results, Friday, 27 AUG 21

Note upload speed..in the Kbps..Hughesnet SUX!
Will test again when house net is turned on and will post those results in this post for comparison.

Quityerbitchin Doc. Hughes Net is my only real option. I'll probably be dead before we get fiber in my area. Of course, I'm hearing really shitty things about ATT's fiber optic service in this part of the state so switching is probably a no go.drlewall wrote:
