Re: What I did in the garage today
Another lathe project!
While out on the last trip, the one night I was camping at a remote spot I thought of "showering" with minimal resources.
Ideas start formulating, the old camping box comes out, things take shape...

A fancy washer to go on the side rail up high on the trailer for...

But it's got me thinking of an awning now.

Re: What I did in the garage today
I changed the brake pads on the little car today. Always amazes me how simple it is, and how much can be saved.
Mr Dealership wants $369 for the brake pads, and $200+ labour.
I bought the exact same brand of pads for around $90, and it took unfit unflexible old me just a couple of hours in the driveway.
I really need to find a new friend with a hoist!
I say that every three years when I do the pads

Re: What I did in the garage today
Ok, I'll bite..
I use to like to wrench, but at my advanced age, it is no longer fun for me. I will GLADLY pay others to fix my shit.
So, abt 10-13 yrs ago, I gave my son a lil KLR 250 that was gave to me. Together we put some work and money into it and he rode it to work and around town. As his boys grew, they gained experience in the saddle on it. And of course, it suffered some abuse, broken turn signals, bent foot pegs etc.
So, it has been sitting in the shop for the past 5 or 6 yrs and I recently got it back. Typical repairs are needed: Clean fuel tank, carb, new turn signals, battery, brake pads etc. So I am going to do this myself. It's small simple stuff and I can suffer thru it.
I did pull the front forks off and sent them to the local bike shop for new seals. Got the forks back a couple weeks ago and this morning I finally got them back on with the front wheel.
Now to order parts, change oil, fix carb and piddle fart around with it and see if I can bring it back to life

Re: What I did in the garage today
Doc and Snowflake,
I had a random day without work yesterday. Inspection is due this month and I needed to replace the brakes on the back of my truck. I had all the time in the world, just puttered my way through it. It was very relaxing and fun with no feeling of "I gotta get this done NOW! So I can do this other thing NOW, too!" ruining the experience.
Saved a nice bit of money and enjoyed it.

It's nothing to look at..just a simple lil' KLR..story behind it is that my best friend bought it new in 98 and rode it to work on occasion. He came down with prostate cancer and in 2007 he GAVE it to me.Delicate Snowflake wrote:![]()

Re: What I did in the garage today
Finished up welding a spare tire carrier together for a buddy today. Texted another friend that is self employed about what I should charge.
"Time and material, what ever your hourly rate is."
At a rate of $65 an hour (find a welding shop that charges that!) with all of my cutting, grinding, welding, and setup work... Then adding on the two options he called me about adding.
I came up with $589. Mind you that this a RV trailer spare tire carrier, there's one on eTrailer.com that you can buy for $129. It's made in Doc's favorite country, but still.
Done doing welding projects for friends. If I see $300 I'll be lucky.
Time to go riding.
Alone.

Re: What I did in the garage today
Finished up that welding project last week with the last and final modification he wanted. He came over to pick it up and asked what he owed me.
OK, here is goes I thought to myself.
Explained "time & material" to him, cost of welding wire, gas, etc. and then told him the total was $589.
was pretty much his reply.
"Now I know that you didn't expect that, I'm not expecting that, give me $300 and you are officially the last welding project I ever do for anybody."
A huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders, I said it. I meant it, and I'm done.
"Uh....... well, I ... uh, you see, I only brought $200 with me. I'll have to go to the bank."
He came back with the other hundred.
Moving on.
Today I sat in t he garage in my chair and fell asleep. Feels so much better.

Re: What I did in the garage today
My garage needs serious attention.
I can never find the tools I need, even though I can visualise them, I know I have them, and have used them previously!
