We are thinking about having it done. Anybody here try it? What service did you use?

My brother has been researching our family history for many years. So far has has traced direct lineage back to the 1,500s.

He then had an issue of which pathway to follow, so he had a DNA test done and he got him back another 100 years in the history to our family's starting point.

I have no idea what it cost, or what was involved. I remember getting this long and way to involved email from him explaining it all.

Think it was WW that said, "Last time I sent my DNA through the mail-only thing I got was a restraining order from the Olsen twins....."

Leave it to WW to come up with the funny. Someday I have to meet that guy or girl. :lol8

We did have the DNA test done. They say I am 48% German and 48% English and 4% Swedish. It was very interesting and helped fill in a good part of the family tree. I actually corresponded with a second cousin that is not too far from here. Then with more research I found that I have many distant relatives in New Zealand and Australia. My wifes test came back as 100% Japanese. I could have predicted that after riding in the car with her driving. :lol8

There is an interesting complication to DNA testing (here in Oz at least) : insurance companies.

It turns out that in the fine print of many insurance policies, e.g. health insurance & life insurance, policy holders are required to send the results of any DNA test they may have to their insurer. The insurer is then (generally) allowed to choose what they will and won't insure for. Many policyholders in this situation are then refused future cover.

If claims are made, and the insurers can spot that you've had DNA tests, then no payout. Insurers generally require a full copy of your medical stuff before large payouts, so if your doc knows you had the test, then they catch you.

They also check your social media to see if you've been telling your friends about your DNA results (etc.).

Just a heads-up :thumb

The Feds have mine and every other soldier, sailor, airman, marine and coastie that has served since sometime in the late 1990s. Also, many states mandate a DNA sample from anyone convicted of a felony crime.

But I think it's illegal for me to buy a DNA test for myself in my state... The great state of YOU CAN'T.
