MREs

Post by Dirigo »

Ever had one? Which one is your favorite?
The new sausage and gravy one is pretty damned good. Especially since it comes with granola with powdered milk.

When we lived in OK. We ate a lot of powdered eggs.. I would make savemelife aka flour gravy. To slather on them eggs....
We would go trading on the res. when they'd go and get their commodities .. 75 lbs, of per person .
They would never trade to good stuff like the 5lbs of cheese.. Only the oatmeal, eggs ,powdered milk , peanut butter..

But I have had many a MRE ... Very hard to get Veg. MRE way back when ..

I always liked the vegetarian MREs, they had tastier entrees and came with nuts and snacks with high protein. I suppose the vegetarian entrees were actually seasoned because they couldn't just add mystery meat and call it flavor.

The first MREs had a lot of freeze dried stuff which was weird and not very good (Pork Patty) or pretty good (Dehydrated mixed fruit). What I thought was interesting is that the crackers and peanut butter tasted exactly the same as the canned versions that were in the C-Rations.

Did you know that you can heat a cup of water for coffee by setting the peanut butter on fire? True. Easier to do with the C-Rat canned version, though.

Some kind of vegetarian pasta. Penne? Hell, I don't remember, its been a long time. I also enjoyed the meatloaf with mashed potatoes so long as I could heat it up.
Beef ravioli was good as well.

I guess it depends how cold, wet and hungry you are.

In the right conditions it must be amazing!
