Basket Case rebuild

Post by campfire »

So, an acquaintance of mine who I see at coffee once in a while has a GS. I run into him last year just before Thanksgiving and he asks............ "Did you hear about my bike? The clutch went out, and I'm thinking of selling it. Tired of riding at my age."
I tell him if he's serious, give me a call. I might need a winter project.
I run into him again (with the wife this time) and he starts in with "I'm ready, need you to get it out of my life. Package deal, everything I have for the bike goes with it. Oh! Sorry, does she know about it?" As he looks at my wife.
We talk a bit more, and then I head out for a walk with the wife. And explain how "good of a deal" this could be.

Cutting to the chase, she let me buy it.

I went over to pick it up and his driveway looked like a garage sale. Luckily I took the trailer.
Boots, gloves, manuals, extra parts, original parts, tire machine, balancer, wheel weights, bungee cords, battery tender, charge cords, USB converters, maps, stuff sacks......... everything.

Image

Even included a lift and a whole bunch of tools

BUT...
Don't you always love those?

The "clutch" turned out to be a little more.

So a transmission overhaul started.

Working on it just short of two months, waiting for parts (the shaft had to come from Germany), and watching WAY too many YouTube videos to learn how to take a GS apart . . . . . . :wall

It started to go back together.

Image

And it worked!~
Finished it up this week and took it for a quick test ride around the block. Then I registered and insured it, and took a longer test ride.
With some good but cold Nor Cal weather. Headed out to the coast and Bodega Bay for some clam chowder.

Then, headed up Hwy 1. I love that road.

So now I'm a GS owner, and yes, I even rode it to Starbucks today to meet up with some other retired old farts. :letsfide

:kat

Later peeps.

Wow, that's great. So, how do you like it compared to the KLR?

Well the first thing I notice between the two is 100 HP is a lot better than 37.
But that extra 140 pounds coupled with the reduced turning radius is a huge factor on which one to throw around. I've never really been a fan of the boxer engine, or even any longitude crankshaft bike. Left & right engine torque in the curves is something I've never gotten used to.
The people are starting to line up asking if I'm going to sell it, and I think I will. I can make a little on it, sell the KLR and buy the V-Strom I've been looking at with very little extra cash.

BUT..............
It's pretty comfy on the road, and I can pass traffic without thinking of any slingshot maneuver like the KLR. This GS will pull out and go around so fast, you have to be careful and look at the speedo so you don't go over 90MPH in a blink.

It does have a Corbin seat that started to get a little hard after 140 miles. I'm spoiled with my Seat Concepts.
Might have to up the price a bit to keep the tire kickers away for a while. You know, so I can ride it a little longer.

Awesome skills, I'd be lost trying to work on a bike down to that level of pull apart, fix and put back together.

Seems just offensive enough to keep the prissy morons at bay. The rest of the morons, however... Well, you can't have everything.

It sounds like something I would buy. Too bad I'm not in the market.

Thanks.

I've already had one "expert" email a lesson on the proper documentation that all GS's should have and be sold with from some GS registry for only $19.

Then a guy calls me and starts asking why the Ohlins haven't been rebuilt yet. I got really short with him and just said
"Then don't buy it. You want a new bike? Go buy something else."

He calmed down and then wanted to trade me a 50K mile V-Strom 650.

Think I'll post it in the Flea Market over on ADV.

The joys of Craigslist. The thread over at ADV is humorous and informative. There are eight million scams in the naked internet.

Last fall when I was trying to sell my daughter's old car I got the usual scammers emailing with car history report scams and the bank check/agent scams. Of course, the ones just fishing for my email address and phone number are legion.

The response that was the funniest, to me, was the guy who said he'd buy the car if he could fuck my daughter. And he included a phone number. I assume that the number was a buddy he was setting up for an irate call from some offended father. When I didn't reply he followed up with another email hoping to get me into a lather...

Don't you wish you had a buddy like that? :lol8

Suh...suh...suh...............sold!

Left the court this evening with a new happy owner. Air Force mechanic over at Travis AFB, we spoke the the same techno speak, had fun showing him all the little things about it. Even missed that bike for a few moments.

Then I looked down at the cash laying on my desk. Goodbye GS.

And the saga continues................

Looked around at all the extra stuff that came with the bike (and did not leave with it), and decided to start posting stuff for sale.
Sold an extra Ohlins shock for $300, the GS-911 scan tool to a friend, and then counted my cash. :letsfide

Decided to upgrade the lift that came with it.
