It had to have happened sometime in the last year...or two. I'm sure that, whatever it was, it was loud, and I heard it, but it must not have been enough for me to pull over and have a look - or, I'd forgotten to have a look when I stopped, though there wasn't much that was obvious to be honest.

I'm going over that mental checklist of things that I should do to the bike, before this trip and the upcoming riding season. The last item on my list...coolant change. Haven't done it on this bike, and it's close to 75k on the odometer. Hey, not *that* big of a deal, right?

So, I go to remove the lower cowl, and by one of the corner screws (that hold the lower cowl, the center inner fairing and the inner fairing on the right side - which is the left side, per Honda) there's a crack in the lower cowl, near the screw hole. Not a biggie, some ground-up ABS and some acetone can fix that right up. I finish getting the lower cowl extracted, and...there's a pile of shattered ABS on the floor.

I had to have been the luckiest guy on earth - whatever it was that hit the bike (rock, pavement, critter...who knows, now?) must have hit it almost dead-on that corner shoulder screw and shattered the plastic holes on those three pieces.

I'm not thinking, but I made an attempt to rebuild what I could using the pieces that I could get in place on the lower cowl. Three hours of effort, and another couple of hours of trying to get things lined up...nope.

Oh, crap.

I gave up last night trying to get stuff lined up and reassembled. I need to get the bike together enough to go on a quick test ride, and make sure everything else is good.

The *good* news, after calling it last night (I just couldn't see what I was doing...), I managed to find some used eBay replacement parts for about half of the price of new. They should show up by the end of the week. Then, I can put Humpty-Dumpty together again.

Not 100% sure on the panel that's inside the fairing...I'll know in a few days. Looks black in the photos in the listing.

EDIT: On the '12 thru '17 bikes, all of those panels are black, rather than the colored versions from the prior versions of the GL1800.

That's also why rattle-cans of paint were made. :ImaPoser

EDIT: Got out there first thing and managed to get things Ty-Wrapped together good enough for now. I did get the test ride in...all other issues resolved. :letsfide

Last part arrived today - need to open the box to verify. Gonna want to do this early in the morning...it's now getting hot in the desert southwest.

Parts installed in time to make it to our nephew's baseball game this morning. All parts in good condition.

Nothing more needs to be done, hopefully.

Why do I subject myself to these things? :fp

And the torque specs are 22-25 ft lbs, but wait! There's a service bulletin out that recommends 30 ft lbs.

And the crows foot wrench I need is NOT in the arsenal.

So I torqued to the click in my elbow.

It's been ~7 weeks since I last had a ride. Suppose I should fire up the app on my phone to see the tire pressures on the bike:

Image

Yeah, I guess I need to consider airing up the tires.

It's also a good way of seeing just what the temp is in the garage.

Hot.

Dominos :finger

Fork seals leaked, covered the brake caliper and rotor in oil. Oil soaked into the brake pads. :wall

Ordered all the brake stuff including a new rotor. :wings

Try to remove the locating pins for the pads.............. :fp

I did win and get the pin out. Helps having a toolbox full of the right tools, just frustrating.

Thought I was almost done and started putting coolant in it.

Guess again. I'll be diving back into the thermostat housing tomorrow.

Yes, I've had a couple of conversations with my truck in the last few days. :DirtDOG
And that wasn't the answer I was looking for either. :lol8

But it fired up today and I was happy.
