The parity between upload/download speeds implies you're hosting something at your end? I recall that costing a pretty penny back when 512/512 was 'fast'.

My internet, TV and phone access is a little complicated. We live in a rural area with no access to cable modem, DSL, etc. One of my day jobs is putting up radio towers that I rent to cellular providers and other wireless carriers. One of my towers is in the city and and has a "line of sight" path to my house. I was able to have fiber internet installed at the city tower location. From there I microwave the internet to a short tower by my house.

Image

The tower in the picture is behind the house. The white dish is the microwave link antenna pointed at the tower in the city. At the city end I pay for 300mb synchronous, un-metered fiber service with one static IP. My wireless link is capable of about 170mb up and down and typically runs at about 150mb. The monthly price for the fiber is $60 and another $5 for the static IP. Gigabit internet is also available for $99/mo but the cost of microwave equipment to support that speed is more than I need to spend.

Also on the tower are two TV antennas to receive off air programming. Currently we pickup 48 channels of network TV and other worthless local programming. But it's free worthless programming, good for local news and weather. The two antennas run into a Amazon Recast box. The Recast processes the off air channels and feeds them into our house LAN. At the TV is a Amazon Fire Stick that works with the Recast and the internet to make the off air channels look like we had cable TV. The fire stick is really pretty amazing for the amount of free programming it has available.

For phone we have a Google Voice account that is free. That is run into a four line key system as line one. Line two is run into a box that connects to my cell phone by bluetooth. So, when I am at home my cell number runs through the home "wired" phone system. Line three is run to a Skype box that I use for communicating with international customers. Also free.

On top of the tower is a pan-tilt-zoom camera that streams live video to YouTube Live. Check it out to see what rural Nebraska looks like in the summer.

As an old Signal Corps soldier I have to doff my cap to you CD. That's some damned impressive leveraging of available assets.

I always get a little nervous during lightning and tornado season but so far in the last five years I have had only a couple equipment failures that caused outages.

My update , the fiber is up to the house !
Almost had a little hiccup yesterday morning..
The Sup came up and said ,It's not on your property yet, it's too far you might not be getting it !!!
HB told him that it was on our land right at the gate...

Well it turns out Sup was wrong ... HA ! Today they hook up the house .. :wings

I can't wait ta test the speed once it's in here ... :thumb
