Quarantine Project

Post by campfire »

Since we have so much time on our hands now with being quarantined and all, I was able to pick up a project before the orders came down last week.

Image

I thought (or had illusions ) of building a monster spare engine for the KLR out of this core.

But I keep finding more issues.

Image

And the deeper I get....

The deeper I get.

Oh balls.

But it's been fun just staying in the garage and taking this thing apart.

All the way apart.

Going to rebuild the head at this point, and sell the cylinder for core charge money. But the dream of another engine has been flushed away with brake parts cleaner like the metal chunks in the bottom of the case.

Looks like the prior owner got their money worth, that's for sure. :eek

He sure did, 73,000+ miles out of this 2012 KLR!

He used it as his commute bike. :letsfide

But I bet I haven't done a valve job in over 35 years. :eek

But it's all coming back to me, and it's fun this time.

The complete rebuild is out of the question now with all the balance shaft/chain/bearings issues.
$100 & a case of beer has given me a lot of satisfaction of working on it. :thumb

I am going to rebuild the head and replace the valves, grind the exhaust, and then put that up for sale.

Good camshaft journals in this one make it worth a little bit. The complete head with fresh valves ready to go should bring $700-800. The cylinder core itself is worth $100.

I'll get some beer money out of it. :Snork

So I'm poking along with the quarantine project and........

Image

The UPS truck shows up.
With the new seat covers for my Land Cruiser!

I'll get to the engine later. So I start ripping the seats out of my truck.

Image

Image

A day & a half later I have one (1) seat done.

Image

:thumb

Like I have anything better to do. Well, I could ride the bike to Tahoe.... :kat
The one seat wears me out, but I notice since it's out, there's a coffee stain on the carpet. Better clean that while it's apart. And since I'm this far, I might as well clean that spot under the back seats, and then there's the ...

Image

I have it all back together now except for the passenger seat, which will get the new cover tomorrow. :Snork

Or the next day.

I did take off and ride :letsfide a twenty mile loop tonight.

Looked at the news today and saw something about the stimulus deposits...
Checked the bank account, and I have more money now.

Ordered the parts for the valve job to celebrate & and stimulate the economy.

WARNING RIGHT UP FRONT rant to follow

:finger

How can anyone post an ad on Craigslist for a 13 year old KLR and ask $4000 for it?

And then state that they have "Built" it up with the "best parts available" that include the cheapest Kenda tires?

:DirtDOG
But the "Doohickey" hasn't been done yet, but he has the parts.

(sorry, just woke up in that mood today)

True.

Very true.

Forecast for 74 degrees today, scattered clouds.
I should go for a ride.

I timed my quarantine project all wrong, we've been back to normal for ages, but of course the builders could not do their work in lock down. The house rebuild has got to the stage where I need to do my bit, ie paint!

Here is the house as we bought it...

And this is it in the midway stage of work...

I spent all weekend plugging nail holes in the weatherboard, then sanding, then painting. At least I can see progress...
