Re: Heavenly sights
It wasn’t a flare, as it lasted to long and was to big. It was a prominence, per the scientists. It was clearly visible through the solar binoculars I had.

The eclipse lets the comet-chasers view comets close to the sun that we normally can't even see.

Re: Heavenly sights
Local news is really pumping up the possibilities of seeing the aurora borealis from the Bay Area here.
I hope so, setting the alarm for midnight to check it out.
If not......
I'll just pee and go back to bed.

If you don't have clouds, go outside tonight!
"aurora as far south as California and Alabama in the U.S. and as far north as Sydney, Australia in the Southern Hemisphere. Folks in the northern U.S. will see the aurora expand well beyond the zenith deep into the southern sky."
Full details are here.
Pic below is from Minnesota, 9 May.

It's hard for me to see horizons, And we had cloud cover .
And I didn't feel like trying to get on top of the mountain at 1 am...
It's still a great Pic !

According to the star-gazing forums, the best way to make it rain, is to buy a new shiny telescope!

Nope! Stayed here at the house with street lights around, the neighbors porch light, and trees to the north. Have a friend that's up in Alaska with his wife, boy did they get a show.
Buddy down near Prescott Arizona sent me this one.
