If you launch a wide-angle telescope into space and take photos of 1.7 b-for-billion stars... we get to see our galaxy!

Crazy that that article is from April of 2018! I wonder why we didn’t hear more about it then? Good find!

For every topic out there, the media chooses what gets told.arcticdude wrote: ↑Mon Mar 31, 2025 8:29 pm Crazy that that article is from April of 2018! I wonder why we didn’t hear more about it then? Good find!
This arrived in an update email just a few days ago in my inbox. You're right, why wasn't it more public back in 2018!!

Re: Heavenly sights
Did you ever wonder how many "starlink" satellites are up there?
https://satellitemap.space/
All are visible as dots... just a few clicked on to reveal their paths.

Re: Heavenly sights
It seems like in October around the 20th we might get a chance to see the C/2025 R2 (SWAN) comet.

Re: Heavenly sights
Oh my gosh! I went out to get the suet and bring it in, and as I looked up, like I always do,
I saw for the very first time a Starlink satellite chain of about 6 or 7.
I'll tell ya ,IF I didn't know what that was , It would have scared the crap out of ya ,Thinking it could be an invasion!

Re: Heavenly sights
That’s pretty cool to see it, but kind of terrible that it’s up there polluting the space.
Definitely conflicted.

Re: Heavenly sights
Set the alarm and got up at 3:20AM to see the lunar eclipse. Looked out the window first to see if there was any cloud cover, and all I saw was stars.
So got dressed and went outside, and it was a pretty cool red moon about halfway through the eclipse. Enjoyed it a bit, felt the cool breeze on me, so headed back to bed.

Re: Heavenly sights
This morning, I sat on the porch in my robe with a cup of coffee and watched for a while, enjoying the moment. The bit of clouds we had gave it an even more ominous feel.

Re: Heavenly sights
Interesting to see gravity's power.
The translunar injection burn got Artemis up over 20,000 MPH... and within an hour they've dropped back to 12,000-ish.
No drag up there in the vacuum so it must be gravity.
Presumably at some point the effect of the moon's gravity will exceed Earth's and they speed up again?
